Si han visto nuestro catálogo seguramente ya saben que somos una editorial nueva con alma antigua, nuestros títulos y autores/as son clásicos de la vanguardia y aunque abordamos temáticas y disquisiciones actuales debemos reconocer que tenemos una fijación con el formato físico del libro. Nos gusta hojear y oler el papel, la tinta, deliramos con los libros antiguos de hojas quebradizas y amarillas, las portadas de tapa dura, las de cuero, los títulos con letras brillantes; sentimos devoción por los libros, verdadero fanatismo, tanto así que últimamente nos preguntamos si no estaremos cegados y cerrados a las posibles bondades del libro digital, ¿nos estaremos perdiendo de algo?
Así que decidimos investigar, sabemos que desde la aparición de las impresoras personales, las fotocopiadoras y la misma Internet, la producción de textos se ha disparado con un impacto similar al de la invención de la imprenta, que permite popularizar los textos, que exista producción a gran escala, aumentando la cantidad de copias y las posibilidades de cobertura y lectura. En este milenio los libros son navegables y quizá cierto aspecto etario, somos lectores del siglo pasado, nos fija y apega a la celulosa, mientras menospreciamos los PDF pensando que ese formato portable de documentos es igual a un libro electrónico. Hemos descubierto que el ebook es más que eso, no queremos desmerecer este formato, cuyas útiles herramientas para marcar, subrayar y comentar cada texto son características que lo acercan a nuestro libro real, sin embargo, las posibilidades del libro digital van mucho más allá.
Existen diversas configuraciones, aplicaciones y dispositivos que nos permiten acceder a este tipo de texto, que a diferencia del PDF, no mantiene una estructura de libro como tal, ya que más bien son como los antiguos rollos manuscritos, sólo que codificados digitalmente, la extensión de sus páginas dependerá de tus ajustes de tamaño y tipo de letra, esta interacción que permite adaptar el texto es quizá la principal característica de este formato, a eso se le suma la posibilidad de seleccionar palabras y acceder automáticamente a su significado, o su traducción o incluso a su audio o su transcripción en braille, más lo clásico, la posibilidad de incorporación de imágenes, videos y audios lo que nos aleja del concepto de libro tradicional.
Entonces, la interacción y la adaptación son los pilares fundamentales del libro electrónico, son más económicos, no pesan, no ocupan espacio y no tengo que ir a la librería o esperar el despacho para tenerlo y leerlo. Por otra parte, el hipertexto es como una historia sin fin, además la oferta de títulos es inmensa se han gestado muchas orgánicas de difusión que comparten textos digitales y digitalizados (que parecen lo mismo pero no lo son), que montan bibliotecas y círculos de lectura en los que se puede acceder gratuitamente a grandes obras. Lo confesamos, no imaginamos la inmensidad de esta nueva propuesta que supera y traspasa la concepción original del libro, no sabíamos tampoco cuán hondo ha calado en nuestro deseo desbordado por leer, porque finalmente es ésa el ansia que buscamos calmar, leer, que las letras construyan en nuestra mente esos universos imposibles, inimaginados, inpensados a los que nos trasladan versos, poemas, cuentos, novelas y ensayos.
Aunque nos parece un interesante desafío hacer de este formato un nuevo y delicioso bocado, vemos sus limitaciones; la más evidente, la temporal su permanencia en el tiempo, los eReaders son dispositivos de obsolescencia programada, cada mejora implica dar de baja la versión anterior, las baterías tampoco son eternas y es factible que más adelante no sean compatibles con las nuevas fuentes de energía, los libros guardados pueden durar más y convertirse en material interesante para la arqueología del futuro, eso siempre y cuando los servidores sigan funcionando y ¿saben cuán profunda es la huella de carbono digital? La otra limitación es más sutil y quizá sea atávica, tal vez el espíritu del escribiente que vive en cada quien añora el arte, las horas de trabajo, la concentración y dedicación que requiere esta disciplina de pluma y papel y que se refleja en luminosos y aromáticos empastes.

So we decided to investigate, we know that since the appearance of personal printers, photocopiers and the Internet itself, the production of texts has skyrocketed with an impact similar to that of the invention of the printing press, which makes it possible to popularize texts, allowing a large scale production, increasing the number of copies and the possibilities of coverage and reading. In this millennium, books are navigable and perhaps due to a certain age aspect, we are readers of the last century, we are fixed and attached to cellulose, while we underestimate PDFs, thinking that this portable document format is the same as an electronic book. We have discovered that the ebook is more than that, we do not want to detract from this format, whose useful tools to mark, underline and comment on each text are characteristics that bring us closer to a real book, however, the possibilities of the digital book go much further.

So, interaction and adaptation are the fundamental pillars of the electronic book, they are cheaper, they do not weigh, they do not take up space and I do not have to go to the bookstore or wait for the delivery to have it and read it. On the other hand, hypertext is like a never-ending story, in addition the offer of titles is immense, many dissemination organizations have been created that share digital and digitized texts (that seem the same but are not), which set up libraries and circles of reading where great works can be freely accessed. We confess it, we didn’t imagine the immensity of this new proposal that exceeds and goes beyond the original conception of the book, we didn’t know either how deep it has penetrated our overflowing desire to read, because finally that is the anxiety that we seek to calm, to read, that the letters build in our mind those impossible, unimagined, unthinkable universes to which verses, poems, stories, novels and essays take us.
Although we find it an interesting challenge to make this format a new and delicious bite, we see its limitations; the most evident, the temporary one, its permanence in time, the eReaders are devices of programmed obsolescence, each improvement implies canceling the previous version, the batteries are not eternal either and it is possible that later they will not be compatible with the new energy sources , the saved books can last longer and become interesting material for the archeology of the future, that is, as long as the servers continue to work and do you know how deep the digital carbon footprint is? The other limitation is more subtle and perhaps atavistic, maybe the spirit of the scribe that lives in each one yearns for the art, the hours of work, the concentration and dedication that this discipline of pen and paper requires and that is reflected in bright and aromatic bindings.
